I fell behind again, but only by a few days. I’m still trying my best to post on a regular basis though.
First we’ll start off with work and my commute to connect with the last post. I’ve gotten used to the commute and waking up early to make it now. I get tired earlier at night, but I guess that’s expected. I have once again avoided a ticket punching last week, so that makes 3 free rides on the train; not too bad.
I’ve been occupying my time on the train by listening to podcasts and playing a little bit of games, Planet Puzzle League exclusively I guess. The podcast I’ve been trying to catch back up on is the Dopecast which is all about drug news and the counter culture. I’m not one for their use personally but I think many of the illegal drugs out there should be legalized and it’s cool to hear what’s going on in that regard. Soon I will be reading on the train too, having purchased Sun Tzu’s The Art of War (since it’s been references often in my daily living for some reason) and Just for Fun, the story of Linus Torvalds (since it was inexpensive and I expect it’s an interesting read). I’ll let you know how those go.

Ever since I started my new job, there has been talk of getting a new office. The company had already been occupying two office spaces, having knocked down a wall that separated the two. We had so outgrown our old space that the development department (where I work) had been relocated to a third space on the first floor of the building; we weren’t even connected to the original office.
How fitting it was then that roughly a week before my one year anniversary (that’s right, I’m a senior developer as of today) we are finally occupying a new office. It was a year in the making, and this was the third space they had looked at and made moves on (after the first two fell through), but we made it. And since most of the office lives in the city, that’s where we moved to. Sadly, I live in the northern suburbs, meaning I nearly doubled my commute….
But it’s not all bad; the new office is really awesome, the location of it is amazing and the development department has finally been reunited with the rest of the company. I was personally looking forward to that later part the most and I’m happy we finally made the move.

Yes, it’s my birthday today. So far I’ve been made to tie a birthday balloon to my chair at work, got lunch paid for and had a number of people say happy birthday to me. Later tonight will include a trip to Mickey Finn’s and this weekend, more Whirlyball! So, there are sure to be pictures of all that up eventually too. But, birthdays are overrated; on to other things.
It’s been about a month since the last post, so it seems like as good a time as any to update things. The new guy started at work and he’s fitting in really well. He seems to know what he’s doing and he’s getting the hang of the system here. We also had the show we sponsored air, but without much added business. Still, things went pretty well, the show turned out really nice and there’s nothing to say people won’t buy from us later.
We’re also still on track for our move to the city over the first weekend in March. The official plan is to pack everything up, have a moving company move it all over the weekend and they be back in business at the new place the next Monday. We’ll see how well that goes over….. still, it’s pretty exciting! In preparation for my commute, I purchased a Nintendo DS Lite; more on that in a little bit. Continue reading →

Wow, if that isn’t the understatement of the year. Eesh, I had really hoped to keep up on things better unlike when things were still on outinthecold….. seems I failed.
Anyway, a lot has happened since, Christ, JULY. I did end up getting a job, working as a PHP/MySQL developer for a company named Select Italy; I couldn’t be happier about it. Well, I’m sure if I was making like a million dollars a year I would be happier, but in realistic terms, I’m all set. It’s good to be back on a steady income instead of having my money come in whenever I can get it. It’s also nice to converse with other like-minded individuals and learn even more about web development (or Italy for that matter).
I’ve also learned a TON about Javascript/AJAX use in web development due to a need to spice things up and learn new things. My boss really likes what I’ve been cranking out and I think it’s been turning out pretty slick if I do say so myself. I’ve become the resident Javascript guy, which is ironic because I really expected going in that I would be greatly overshadowed by everyone else’s knowledge on the language. To a point, I am by one of the guys, but I’m the first one to start working it into the actual website on my own instead of just internal applications. Or, that’s how I see it anyway.
The job is part of the reason I haven’t posted on here is so damn long. It’s also why I have no new project sites or updates on existing sites (schoolinsummertime specifically). When you sit and code all day long, it’s hard to come home and actually want to sit in front of the computer even more. I do keep telling myself that “this weekend I’ll work on something” but it hasn’t happened once yet. Sigh….

Well, I still haven’t heard back from the office I went to last week. Since then, though, I’ve had a phone interview with a company through another palcement comany and gotten contacted by 2 more placement companies. I am also meeting with one of them this coming Thursday which should be a good time.
One thing I have noticed with all these people is that they all want your resume in “Word formatted form” and don’t take kindly to offers of PDF versions. I think that’s kind of odd, since a PDF would be harder to tamper with and will always look the same regardless of how you look at it. It also assumes that all people with resumes have access to a computer with Word on it. In my case, I don’t. Continue reading →

Alright, that may be overdoing it a bit, but it was said to me. It was said to me during a technical evaluation that I was doing in order to get a job. But before I get into that, I should explain my situation.
I’ve been working with a college friend of mine for the past year now, and while I have learned a ton during that time and made some cash, it hasn’t been as great as I had hoped. Seems I’m not cut out for entrepeneurialship just yet, at least without more motivation than just money. So, it’s time to find me some steady income. So, off to the job junting I go. A friend of mine, Money, and I decided to get into the t-shirt printing business. It all started with him testing out a firewall I was building for his boss by pinging random websites. He tried to ping hugenutz.com and didn’t get a response. After checking into it, he realized that the domain was available for purchase, so naturally he bought it.
After the purchase, he asked me what to do with the website. He was planning to use it as a personal homepage of sorts and post his pictures and maybe make a little blog; just like I did with this domain. My suggestion to him, though, was to sell t-shirts. He liked the idea, so I looked into pricing on equipment, got some things in order, told him the prices and we ordered everything up. We got all the equipment we ordered on Easter weekend, but since his basement was pretty messy, we didn’t get much chance to do anything with it. Continue reading →
